Adoption of Resource Conservation Technologies in Indo-Gangetic Plains of India: Scouting for Profitability and Efficiency AgEcon
Singh, N.P.; Singh, R.P.; Kumar, Ranjit; Vashist, A.K.; Khan, Farida; Varghese, Nisha.
This study has evaluated the superiority of resource conservation technologies (RCTs) over conventional methods of cultivation and has identified the factors influencing adoption of these technologies. It has provided succinct evidences from four states — Bihar, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh — by comparing the adopters and non-adopters of RCTs in the rice-wheat cropping system of the Indo-Gangetic Plains of India. The study has highlighted superiority of RCTs over the conventional practices in terms of cost saving and efficient inputs-use. However, there is a need to internalize the RCTs in their totality by applying plans and strategies based on local dynamics. The study has suggested the need of policy formulations for dissemination and wider...

Diversification of Indian Agriculture: Composition, Determinants and Trade Implications AgEcon
Singh, N.P.; Kumar, Ranjit; Singh, R.P..
The pattern of diversification across states/crops in India has been schematized and various determinants of diversification have been deciphered. To objectively confer the empirical resonance, values of Simpson index have been estimated. The diversification index (SID) has been found to range from 0.47 (WB) to 0.90 (Karnataka) in 1990-91 and from 0.40 (Orissa) to 0.92 (Karnataka) in 2000-01. The increase in diversification Index signifies shift towards non-foodgrain crops. In Karnataka, though the Index has increased, but the similar increases in area under foodgrain imply shift from coarse to fine cereals. Agricultural diversification is influenced by a number of infrastructural and technological factors. The coefficients have indicated that the presence...

Enhancing Sustainable Development of Diverse Agriculture in India AgEcon
Singh, R.P.; Singh, N.P.; Kumar, Ranjit.
Agriculture in India occupies an important place as it contributes nearly 25 per cent of GDP and two-thirds of the population depend upon it. Agricultural growth in the past has been sufficient to move from severe food crisis to aggregate food surplus today. The rainfed regions are diverse in terms of resource base, varying from resource rich regions harnessing substantial production to resource poor regions with restricted potential. These resource poor regions are mostly dominated by secondary crops. Barring maize and potato, secondary crops are loosing ground against the finer cereals, cash and commercial crops. Therefore, there is an urgent need to provide a leverage to these crops by providing support in terms of technological advancement and policy...

Identification of Pulling Factors for Enhancing the Sustainable Development of Agriculture with Special Reference to Maize in India AgEcon
Singh, R.P.; Kumar, Ranjit; Singh, N.P..
Indian agriculture is highly diversified both in terms of production environment and activities. The main objective of the study is to identify and prioritize constraints and accelerators of agricultural diversification and promotion of selected promising CGPRT crops, I.e: maize. Five states namely Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajashtan and Uttar Pradesh have been selected for the study. The results of the study are mainly based on tabular analysis using simple statistical methods like arithmetic mean and standard deviation.

Income and Employment Pattern in Rural Area of Chhattisgarh: A Mircro View AgEcon
Bhakar, R.; Banafar, K.N.S.; Singh, N.P.; Gauraha, A.K..
This micro level study, conducted in the state of Chhattisgarh to examine the income and employment pattern, has revealed that farm and non-farm activities are the main sources of income and employment and off-farm activity (agricultural labour) contributes only a negligible portion. The smallholders as well as landless households during the slack agricultural season depend on rural non-farm activities as the source of earning. A wide disparity in economy of farm and non-farm households has been observed. The income has been found higher under farm than non-farm households, but on per capita basis, no significant difference has been observed between farm and non-farm households. Within farm households, there are wide disparities between marginal and large...

Is Futures Market Mitigating Price Risk: An Exploration of Wheat and Maize Market AgEcon
Singh, N.P.; Kumar, Ranjit; Singh, R.P.; Jain, Praveen Kumar.
Instability of commodity prices has always been a major concern of the producers as well as the consumers in an agriculture-dominated country like India. Farmers in a bid to avert the price risk often tend to go for distress sale and thereby reduce the potential returns. In order to cope up with this problem, futures trading has emerged as a viable option for providing a greater degree of assurance on the price front. Thus, futures markets serve as a risk -shifting function. In the present study, an attempt has been made to look into the mechanism of movement of spot and futures prices for two important food crops in Indian agriculture. The Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) test has been used for both the crops to check the stationarity of the time series...

Labour Migration in Indo-Gangetic Plains: Determinants and Impacts on Socio-economic Welfare AgEcon
Singh, N.P.; Singh, R.P.; Kumar, Ranjit; Padaria, R.N.; Singh, Alka; Varghese, Nisha.
In India, male out-migration from rural to urban areas has increased in recent years, especially in the Indo- Gangetic regions of the country. This indicates that most of the developed regions of India are utilizing labour force of backward areas. The paper has investigated on labour out-migration from the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to find its determinants and its impacts on farm economy. The analysis of determinants shown that the number of members in a family and their educational status have a positive impact on migration. As a result of male out-migration, the women left behind in the villages assume a major role in various farm activities resulting in the so-called ‘feminization of agriculture’. It has also empowered the female members of the...

Sugar Industry in Uttar Pradesh: Efficiency Still Holds the Key AgEcon
Singh, N.P.; Singh, Paramatma; Singh, R.P..
The sugar industry is a major agro-based industry of Uttar Pradesh where cropping pattern is largely subsistence-oriented and sugarcane is one of the important cash crops. During 2001-02, the state had 20.35 lakh ha area under sugarcane out of the total 44.03 lakh ha area under sugarcane in the country. The sugar industry has shown considerable instability in the level of production as a result of inter-dependence and inter-relationship between sugarcane, gur, khandsari and white sugar, leading to fluctuations in the production of sugarcane as well as sugar. These fluctuations emanate from the presence of various processing sectors and the differential governmental policies. Such an uncertain state of affairs is neither conducive to sound growth of the...

Volatile Price and Declining Profitability of Black Pepper in India: Disquieting Future AgEcon
Hema, M.; Kumar, Ranjit; Singh, N.P..
Historically, black pepper has been a highly tradable commodity; its domestic price, production as well as profitability are highly influenced by its international prices. In 2003-04, the domestic prices of black pepper plunged down to Rs 74/kg from a peak of Rs 215/kg in 1999-2000. The study has therefore been undertaken to identify the drivers for its production, examine the profitability of the farmers and analyse the price behaviour and mechanism of price transmission in black pepper. Like other major spices, the production of black pepper in India has increased substantially over the years. Area under the crop and lagged export quantity have been the main drivers influencing pepper production in the country. From the field survey in two major black...
